Cardiobacterium violaceum: a motile, gram-negative, non-spore-bearing rod, found in soil in tropic and subtropic environments; a cause of human infections including septicemia, pneumonia, wound infections, and abscesses; it can be rapidly fatal, and may relapse after cessation of antibiotic therapy.
