Common bile duct (organ): The common bile duct is a tube that carries bile from the cystic duct into the duodenum of the small intestine. During digestion, bile flows from the gallbladder, where bile is stored and concentrated, into the cystic duct and into the common bile duct. Bile then flows through the ampulla of Vater and into the duodenum.
The common bile duct is formed by the merging of the cystic duct and the common hepatic duct and is located in the upper right side of the abdomen. Conditions that can directly or indirectly afflict the common bile duct include gallstones, cholangitis, cholecystitis, biliary cirrhosis and biliary duct cancer.
