Dentition (organ): Dentition is a term that refers to the development, number, types and arrangement of an individual's set of teeth. A detention is unique and specific to each person and can be used as an identification tool. A dentition consists of teeth that the body uses to chew, grasp, cut and grind food, beginning the process of ingestion and digestion. The dentition is set in the gums and jaw and held in place by the bone of the jaw. There are four types of teeth: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. Two different dentitions normally develop during life. These consist of the deciduous teeth and the permanent teeth.
Conditions that afflict the dentition include broken/missing teeth, dental caries, periodontal disease, developmental abnormalities, dental attrition, dental erosion and dental impaction.
