Dermis (organ): The dermis is the thick layer of skin that lies under the epidermis. As the largest part of the skin, the dermis is a part of the integumentary system. Functions of the dermis include cushioning and protecting the tissues beneath it. The dermis contains blood vessels and sweat glands, which help to regulate body temperature and excrete some wastes. It also contains sensory nerve endings and sensory receptors, hair follicles, sebaceous glands and sweat glands.
Conditions that can afflict the dermis include dysplagia, malignant melanoma, burns, acne, infection, trauma, herpes, inflammation and lacerations.
Dermis (organ): See Dermis (organ information).
