Description of Embolism, Paradoxical

Embolism, Paradoxical: Blockage of a systemic artery by a thrombus originating in a systemic vein, which has passed through a defect that permits direct communication between the right and the left side of the heart, notably an open foramen ovale. It is also called crossed embolism. (Dorland, 28th ed).
