Hemostasis: Although the principal stress correctly falls on the second syllable in this word, the pronunciation hemosta'sis is more usual in the U.S. Do not confuse this word with homeostasis. (1) The arrest of bleeding. (2) The arrest of circulation in a part. (3) Stagnation of blood. SYN: hemostasia. [hemo- + G. stasis, a standing]

Hemostasis: process of arresting blood flow or bleeding, either physiologically by vasoconstriction and coagulation or by mechanical or surgical means.

Hemostasis: The process which spontaneously arrests the flow of BLOOD from vessels carrying blood under pressure. It is accomplished by contraction of the vessels, adhesion and aggregation of formed blood elements (eg. ERYTHROCYTE AGGREGATION), and the process of BLOOD COAGULATION.

Hemostasis (organ): Hemostasis is the process of blood clotting. Normal hemostasis requires the actions of many elements, including platelets, fibrin, and clotting factors.
Conditions that can afflict hemostasis include haemophilia, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis, chemotherapy, hypofibrinogenaemia and dysfibrinogenemias.
