Ileum as an Organ

Ileum (organ): The ileum is the third and final section of the small intestine. It is a hollow muscular tube that connects the jejunum to the large intestine through the ileocecal valve. Partially digested food, or chyme, is moved from the jejunum into the ileum through the action of peristalsis. Most of the absorption of nutrients takes place in the ileum.

Conditions that afflict the ileum include small intestine cancer, celiac disease, Crohn's disease, and paralytic ileus.

Ileum (organ): See Ileum (organ information).
