Description of Lanugo

Lanugo: Fine body hair found on human fetuses.

Lanugo: [TE] fine, soft, lightly pigmented fetal hair with minute shafts and large papillae; it appears at the end of the twelfth week and helps to hold the vernix caseosa on the skin. SYN: downy hair [TA], primary hair*, lanugo hair. [L. down, wooliness, from lana, wool]
