Levocarnitine: An amino acid derivative. Levocarnitine facilitates long-chain fatty acid entry into mitochondria, therefore delivering substrate for oxidation and subsequent energy production. Fatty acids are utilized as an energy substrate in all tissues except the brain. (NCI04)
