Mandible as an Organ

Mandible (organ): The mandible is a bone that is a part of the skull and the skeletal system. The mandible provides structure to the lower part of the jaw. The jaw is vital to such activities as chewing and talking and also provides insertion points for muscles of the face and head. Movement of the jaw is due in part to contraction of the temporal muscle.

Conditions that can afflict the mandible include infection, trauma, jaw fractures, cancer, dislocations, sprains, strain, temporomandibular dysfunction (TMJ) and birth defects.

Mandible (organ): See Mandible (organ information).
