Mouth as an Organ

Mouth (organ): The mouth is an orifice and the entrance to the gastrointestinal tract and a part of the digestive system. The mouth area is determined by the borders of the lips, hard palate, soft palate, cheeks and tongue. Structures and saliva that contains enzymes begin the processes of ingestion and digestion in the mouth. The mouth also includes the teeth and opens into the pharynx. Food that has been chewed and lubricated passes from the mouth into the pharynx and esophagus by swallowing. The mouth is also a part of the respiratory system and can take in air.

Conditions that afflict the mouth include mouth cancer, periodontal disease, missing/broken teeth, dental caries, cleft lip and cleft palate.

Mouth (organ): See Mouth (organ information).
