Introduction: Prealbumin

Description of Prealbumin

Prealbumin: (1) A protein component of plasma having a molecular weight of about 55,000 and containing 1.3% carbohydrate; estimated plasma concentration is 0.3 g per 100 mL; abnormal levels of prealbumin are found in cases of familial amyloidosis. SYN: transthyretin. (2) The protein-containing zone observed in zone electrophoresis of serum that migrates more rapidly than serum albumin.

Prealbumin: A tetrameric protein, molecular weight between 50,000 and 70,000, consisting of 4 equal chains, and migrating on electrophoresis in 3 fractions more mobile than serum albumin. Its concentration ranges from 7 to 33 per cent in the serum, but levels decrease in liver disease.
