Introduction: REEDS syndrome

Description of REEDS syndrome

REEDS syndrome (medical condition): A rare inherited condition characterized by the presence of tumors that develop from smooth muscle tissue in the skin, uterus and the kidneys. The skin anomalies can occur on any part of the body and gradually increase in number and size with age. Kidney tumors develop in only a relatively small proportion of patients with the condition.

Treatments for REEDS syndrome (Hereditary Leiomyomatosis and Renal Cell Cancer) include:

  • Skin lesions that become painful may be removed surgically or through cryoablation or laser. Uterine fibroids can be managed by antihormonal medications, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists, myomectomy or a hysterectomy. Pain medication or antidepressants may be required in some cases. Patients need to be monitored regularly so that any changes can be assessed and treated if necessary. As the condition is inherited, genetic counseling is recommended
