Respiratory system as an Organ

Respiratory system (organ): The respiratory system includes the organs, structures and substances that take in and transport air into the body during processes that include inhalation. Substances in the air include vital oxygen and other gasses and substances carried in the air, such as viruses and molds. The respiratory system also is involved with removing waste from the body in the form of carbon dioxide during processes that include exhalation. The respiratory system includes the nose, mouth, trachea, and lungs.

The respiratory system interacts closely with the circulatory system and works directly or indirectly with every other system in the body, including the nervous system, genitourinary system, musculoskeletal system, immune system, digestive system and endocrine system.

Respiratory system (organ): The respiratory system plays a vital role in delivering oxygen to the body --- fuel for all the body's functions. It also removes carbon dioxide waste, eliminates toxic waste, regulates temperature, and stabilizes blood acid-alkaline balance (pH).

Respiratory system (organ): See Respiratory system (organ information).
