Introduction: Sickle cell test

Description of Sickle cell test

Sickle cell test: A test that screens for the abnormal gene that results in sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait.

Sickle cell test: in an anaerobic wet preparation containing equal amounts of blood and 2% sodium bisulfite, erythrocytes containing hemoglobin S undergo a change in shape to a sickle-cell form; the number of sickled red blood cells per 1000 red blood cells is determined and expressed as a percentage.
