Sigmoid colon (organ): The sigmoid colon is a hollow tube that comprises the fourth portion of the colon. The sigmoid colon is located in the lower abdomen and is a part of the digestive system and the gastrointestinal tract. Digested food residue moves from the descending colon into the sigmoid colon then is moved into the rectum through the action of peristalsis. The descending colon helps to form feces and absorbs water into the body.
