Skull as an Organ

Skull (organ): The skull is a bony structure that encases the brain and includes the cranium and the mandible, which is the structure underlying the jaw. The skull is a part of the skeletal system. The main functions of the skull are to protect the brain and give shape and support to the face and jaw and provide insertion points for muscles of the face and head. The skull also provides a fixed positioning for the eyes and ears so they can function optimally in conjunction with the brain.

The skull is comprised of 22 smaller bones, including the maxilla, ethmoid, sphenoid, frontal, temporal and occipital bones. Conditions that can afflict the skull include infection, trauma, facial fractures, cranial fractures, jaw fractures, cancer, and birth defects.

Skull (organ): See Skull (organ information).
