Small interfering RNA: short sequence of RNA which can be used to silence gene expression; small antisense RNAs that are generated from specific double stranded RNAs which trigger targeted messenger RNA degradation (RNA INTERFERENCE); serve as guides for cleavage of homologous messenger RNA in the RNA-induced silencing complex; do not confuse with SMALL NUCLEAR RNA.
