Somatostatin: [MIM*182450] A tetradecapeptide capable of inhibiting the release of somatotropin by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; somatostatin has a short half-life; it also inhibits the release of insulin, glucagon, and gastrin. Used in the treatment of acromegaly, gigantism, and pancreatic tumors. SYN: growth hormone-inhibiting hormone, somatotropin release-inhibiting factor, somatotropin release-inhibiting hormone. Somatostatin: The synthetic acetate salt of a long-acting cyclic octapeptide with pharmacologic properties mimicking those of the natural hormone somatostatin. Similar to somatostatin, octreotide suppresses the luteinizing hormone response to gonadotropin-releasing hormone, decreases splanchnic blood flow, and inhibits the release of serotonin, gastrin, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), secretin, motilin, pancreatic polypeptide, and thyroid stimulating hormone. Somatostatin: any of several cyclic tetradecapeptides elaborated primarily by the median eminence of the hypothalamus and by the delta cells of the pancreatic islets; they inhibit release of a variety of hormones, including growth hormone, thyrotropin, corticotropin, insulin, glucagon, gastrin, secretin and renin.

Somatostatin: A 14-amino acid peptide named for its ability to inhibit pituitary GROWTH HORMONE release, also called somatotropin release-inhibiting factor. It is expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the gut, and other organs. SRIF can also inhibit the release of THYROID-STIMULATING HORMONE; PROLACTIN; INSULIN; and GLUCAGON besides acting as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. In a number of species including humans, there is an additional form of somatostatin, SRIF-28 with a 14-amino acid extension at the N-terminal.
