Startle-induced seizures (medical condition): A form of epilepsy which is triggered by hearing a sudden unexpected stimulus such as a sudden sound. The seizures usually last less than 30 seconds and can occur numerous times during the day. The seizure involves a startle response followed by stiffening of the muscles for a short period of time. Muscle jerking may also be involved and falls are common. These types of seizures are extremely difficult to treat and tend to occur in patients with damage to the brain and intellectual handicap. These seizures often occur in Downs syndrome patients.
