Swallowing (symptom): Problems with the ability to swallow.
Swallowing (organ): The process of intaking food or liquid from mouth to stomach.
Swallowing (organ): Swallowing involves taking solid or liquid food from the mouth, past the epiglottis, down the esophagus, and into the stomach. The epiglottis serves to prevent food going down to the lungs ("the wrong way") by blocking the airways during swallowing. Automatic muscular action (peristalsis) moves food along the esophagus and into the stomach, rather than gravity, which explains why we can still swallow even when upside-down or floating in zero gravity.
