Teeth as an Organ

Teeth (organ): The teeth are bony structures and tools that the body uses to chew, grasp, cut and grind food. By doing these actions, the teeth begin the process of ingestion and digestion. The teeth are set in the gums and jaw and held in place by the bone of the jaw. There are four types of teeth: incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. Two sets of teeth normally develop during life: the deciduous teeth and the permanent teeth.

Conditions that afflict the teeth include broken/missing teeth, dental caries, periodontal disease, developmental abnormalities, dental attrition, dental erosion and dental impaction.

Teeth (organ): Adults have 32 permanent teeth that start to appear around age 6 and onwards. Babies and toddlers have 20 milk teeth that usually gradually appear between the ages of 6 months to 3 years.

Teeth (organ): See Teeth (organ information).
