Thiamphenicol-induced polyneuropathy (medical condition): Use of an antimicrobial drug called Thiamphenicol may cause damage to the peripheral nervous system (neuropathy) as it can have a toxic effect on the nerves. Symptoms usually start in the outermost parts of the body such as the fingers and toes and moves towards the centre of the body. Usually more than one nerve is affected (polyneuropathy). Tolerance to the drug may vary amongst people with the elderly and other susceptible people having lower thresholds before nerve problems occur. Thiamphenicol tends to cause mainly sensory symptoms rather than motor neuropathy (movement problems).
