Introduction: Viscum

Description of Viscum

Viscum: (1) The berries of Viscum album (family Loranthaceae), a parasitic plant growing on apple, pear, and other trees; has been used as an oxytocic. SYN: mistletoe. (2) Herbage of Phoradendron flavescens, American mistletoe; has been used as an oxytocic and emmenagoque.

Viscum: A plant genus in the family VISCACEAE, order Santalales, subclass Rosidae, class Magnoliopsida. Species of this genus contain cytotoxic LECTINS. The common name of MISTLETOE is used for many species of this and the LORANTHACEAE families.
