Introduction: Neonatal Jaundice

Newborn babies often suffer from a slight yellow tinge of the skin and eyes caused by a type of jaundice called neonatal jaundice. This is from bilirubin in the blood because of the immaturity of their livers. This usually resolves without treatment in a few days, but in severe cases it can require treatment.

Treatments for Neonatal Jaundice

• Watchful waiting - in the normal mild cases the condition usually corrects itself within a few days.
• Mild sunlight exposure - usually indirect light, taking extreme care not to sunburn the baby's skin.
• UV light exposure - using a mild artificial light source.
