What is Neural tube defect?
What is Neural tube defect?
- Neural tube defect: Any defect that occurs to the neural tube.
- Neural tube defect: Congenital malformations of the central nervous system and adjacent structures related to defective neural tube closure during the first trimester of pregnancy generally occurring between days 18-29 of gestation. Ectodermal and mesodermal malformations (mainly involving the skull and vertebrae) may occur as a result of defects of neural tube closure. (From Joynt, Clinical Neurology, 1992, Ch55, pp31-41)

Neural tube defect is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of
Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). This means that Neural tube defect, or a subtype of Neural tube defect,
affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Ophanet, a consortium of European partners,
currently defines a condition rare when it affects 1 person per 2,000.
