Glossary for Neurosyphilis

  • Alzheimer's Disease: Dementia-causing brain disease mostly in seniors and the elderly.
  • Cranial nerve palsies: cranial nerve being affected due to a space occupying lesions.
  • Diplopia: Double vision
  • Encephalitis: Dangerous infection of the brain
  • Hemiparesis: One-sided paralysis of the body
  • Hydrocephalus: A rare condition where the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid is impaired by dilated brain ventricles which causes the fluid to accumulate in the skull and hence result in increased brain pressure.
  • Mosquito-borne diseases: Diseases that are carried by the mosquito
  • Multiple Sclerosis: Autoimmune attack on spinal nerves causing diverse and varying neural problems.
  • Ophthalmoplegia: A disorder that is characterised by the paralysis of the eye muscles
  • Secondary syphilis: A condition which is characterized by fever, multiform skin eruptions, iritis, alopecia, mucous patches and severe pain in the head and joints
  • Stroke symptoms: Brain-related symptoms of bleeding or blockage.
  • Syphilis: A sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria (Treponema pallidum). The condition is often asymptomatic in the early stages but one or more sores may be present in the early stages. Untreated syphilis usually results in remission of visible symptoms but further severe damage may occur to internal organs and other body tissues which can result in death.
  • Tertiary syphilis: A condition which is characterized by late generalized syphilis with involvement of many organs and tissues
  • Unsteady gait: A condition which is characterized by a poorly balanced gait
  • Urinary Incontinence: Reduced ability to control urine flow.
