10 percent of COPD patients die within 3 months of being in hospital

An audit has found that over 10% of people with COPD die within 3 months of being admitted to hospital for the disease. COPD is the 5th highest cause of death in England and Wales and represents 10% of all acute hospital admissions. The disease causes breathing difficulties and disabilities due to blocked airways and damaged lungs. The audit found that the presence of respiratory consultants in the hospital reduced the risk of death from COPD. The British Lung Foundation claims that 900,000 people in the UK have diagnosed COPD and another 1.5 million are undiagnosed.
