In 2000, a mentally retarded man who had a history of schizophrenia catatonia was taken to an emergency room after he stopped eating and drinking for several days. His doctor failed to monitor him closely and the many soon died from an electrolyte imbalance as a result of malnutrition and dehydration. The family sued for medical malpractice and they were awarded nearly $1.2 million over his wrongful death.
