$3.2 million paid by cigarette company to a sufferer of chronic emphysema

A tobacco company paid out $3.2 million to a previous long-term smoker which is a very large amount for a single judgment case. The man is now suffering from chronic emphysema and requires an oxygen tank and a wheelchair. The original award of $6.5 million was cut in half as he was partly to blame for his smoking. It is the first time the cigarette maker Philip Morris has had to pay out to an individual. In 1997, they paid $349 million in a class-action secondhand smoke lawsuit.
