Pregnant women who are HIV-positive and who are co-infected with genital herpes have a higher risk of transferring AIDS to their child. A diagnosis of herpes before or during a pregnancy implies treatment with antiviral medications to avoid cross infection to the baby. Studies have found that babies born to mother's with HIV and herpes are five times more likely to contract HIV than babies born to mother's without herpes. Therefore, scientists are considering recommending prophylactic treatment for pregnant mothers with HIV to reduce possible transmission during delivery.
