People who consume moderate amounts of alcohol were 43% less likely to develop metabolic syndrome reports a study involving over 8,000 people. 1-19 drinks per month reduced the risk by 35% and more than 20 drinks reduced the risk by 66%. The beneficial effects were only observed in those who consumed beer and wine, not liquor. Symptoms of metabolic syndrome include obesity and high blood pressure which often lead to diabetes and heart disease. Alcohol consumption increases HDL cholesterol, reduces triglycerides and waist girth.
