Postpartum depression is a grossly under diagnosed complication of pregnancy and can have serious implications. One woman allegedly murdered her 10 month old baby while she was suffering from postpartum depression. Sadness following the birth of a baby is common (85% of new mothers) and usually lasts under two weeks. Postpartum depression may last for up to 18 months following delivery. It is believed to be caused by hormonal changes following delivery and the condition can deteriorated if the woman is suffering other stresses. A tenth of women suffer from the condition which can be treated with counseling and medication. One in a thousand women suffer from postpartum psychosis which is a severe condition involving hallucinations, paranoid thoughts and delusions. Postpartum psychosis often results in mothers harming their babies.
