Antidepressant prescriptions should not be the first line of defense in treating depression

Health authorities in Britain are requesting that caution be exercised in prescribing Prozac-type antidepressants. Medication should be a last resort after counseling and should be used at minimum possible dose. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has requested that warnings be clarified to consumers about the risk of withdrawal symptoms. Young adults should be prescribed the minimum dose of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and monitored closely. Mild depression should not require antidepressant treatment. In some adults, the benefits of SSRI's outweigh the risks. The MHRA also wants the use of Effexor to be restricted due to associated risks and it should never be given to people with heart disease. Seroxat is banned from use in children following the discovery of its link to suicide risk.
