Workers exposed to asbestos have been found to increase their family's risk of developing asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. Mesothelioma mainly grows in the membrane that surrounds the lungs, but can also affect the tissue of any internal organ. It is caused by inhaling asbestos particles which was a building material found in insulation, tiles, car parts, and many other products used in the building, manufacturing and shipbuilding industries. Secondary exposure is believed to have come from the family members who cleaned the workers' clothing that had asbestos particles on them, primarily the wives and daughters. New preventative measures ensure that workers exposed to asbestos during their jobs wear protective clothing at work, shower at work and change clothes before returning home.
