C sections are on the increase in the U.S, regardless of public health attempts at curbing the rise, comprising 29.1% of all deliveries in 2004. Parents and obstetricians are more cautious about infant outcomes and medical malpractice suits from complicated vaginal deliveries and concern with vaginal deliveries after previous C sections. Studies also revealed that preterm births and multiple pregnancies had also increased in this time, leading to premature deliveries. C sections were originally reserved for emergencies, as it involved invasive surgery to remove the fetus from the womb, which risked the mother’s health in terms of infection, wound breakdown, and prolonged recovery.
