Calcium supplementation in pregnant women may have positive blood pressure consequences in offspring

Researchers at the University of Miami have recently completed a study which indicates that calcium intake during the second trimester of pregnancy affects the blood pressure of newborns. Higher calcium intake during this time of pregnancy was directly related to lower blood pressure of the resulting 6 month old. Blood pressure readings at 6 months are a good predictor of adult blood pressure. Thus calcium supplementation during pregnancy may help reduce the incidence of high blood pressure in their children when they reach adulthood. The recommendation is that pregnant women have 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily.
