Cause of depression needs to be ascertained before appropriate treatment can be prescribed



A spokesperson for the Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation claims that doctors need to be very careful when diagnosing and treating mental disorders. It has been found the antidepressants prescribed to treat depression may make the patients condition deteriorate or may even prove fatal. If a antidepressants are prescribed to a patient who actually has bipolar disorder or some other manic disorder, then the treatment may result in increasing depression and even suicide. Treatment in these cases with could have been successful if the medication was teamed with a bipolar treatment such as lithium.
