Certain physiological conditions can increase the risk of a new mother developing postpartum depression. Exhaustion or sleep deprivation can play a major role in the development of the condition. Following birth, a mother's estrogen and serum lipid cholesterol level will drop quickly which can affect her emotional well being due to the imbalance. Existing depression will almost definitely lead to postpartum depression. Other factors that can affect emotional well-being are lack of social support, unemployment, financial problems, birth complications, medical problems with the newborn, failed breast feeding attempts or an unwanted pregnancy. Techniques that can be used to cope with or prevent postpartum depression are: making time to yourself, leave the house daily, rest whenever possible, sleep when the infant sleeps, accept help offered, eat abundant fruit and vegetables and keep caffeine and sugar to a minimum.
