Cervical screening is a proven asset in the prevention of cervical cancer with women from 21 years old or within 3 years of initiating sexual intercourse recommended for screening. The normal screening time is every 2 years, but yearly review is required for people with the risk factors of congenital exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES), HIV, immunocompromise, or long-term steroid therapy. Pap smear tests can be excused in women who are older than 70, and who have not had an abnormal test in 10 years or have had greater than 3 normal results in a row. Cervical screening is not necessary in women who have had the cervix removed, i.e. total hysterectomy, unless the surgery was due to cervical cancer.
