Chicken pox vaccine may prove effective against shingles as well

Both chicken pox and herpes zoster (shingles) are caused by the varicella virus but the varicella vaccine is 90% effective against chickenpox and its effect on shingles is unknown. Researchers are will attempt to determine whether any changes need to be made to current vaccination regimes - perhaps older people who have already had chicken pox may benefit from the varicella vaccine with respect to reducing the risk of developing shingles. Shingles results when a virus reactivates and causes a painful skin rash causing feelings of pain and burning on nerves.
