Chinese culture makes suicide more acceptable than other Christian societies. A Chinese woman made three attempts at suicide after suffering from postnatal depression following the birth of her son. She was probably suffering from the more severe from of postpartum psychosis which affects less than ½ % of mothers. Her final suicide attempt left her son dead and herself unconscious. She is currently being trialed for murder and is still trying to overcome her depression. The woman had undergone therapy following her first suicide attempt but it did not help. The Chinese culture has the cultural expectation that motherhood brings joy so when it doesn't women are often driven to suicide by shame. Depression tends to be unacknowledged in these cultures. Also, cultural beliefs tend to make women murder their children with them as it is seen as not sinful.
