Cough medicine to treat fibromyalgia

Muscle pain experienced in fibromyalgia, a condition where sufferers also feel run down and have sleeping difficulty, can be dampened with cough suppressant mixture as it decreases the pain signal from the nerve to the brain. However, side effects with large doses occur and include disorientation and amnesia. Fibromyalgia is believed to be caused by a hypersensitivity of the pain perception area in the brain which over processes pain signals from the body's nerves. In a study to investigate the usefulness of cough medicine for pain control both women with and without fibromyalgia reported lower thresholds for pain after taking the suppressant.
