Dental authority highlights the link between oral health and smoking

The Academy of General Dentistry claims that smoking is the number one cause of preventable deaths and disease in the US. Smoking also increases the prevalence of gum disease and oral cancer. Gum disease and tooth loss is a chronic infection and inflammation of the gums and even the surrounding tissue. In the long-term, bones that hold the tooth in place may become destroyed. Symptoms of gum disease are red, swollen or tender gums, gums that pull away from teeth, bad breath, loose teeth, separating teeth and bleeding gums when brushing or flossing. Evidence of oral cancer includes red, white or discolored patches in mouth, patches in or around mouth, lumps in or around mouth, difficulty swallowing and frequent bleeding from mouth or throat. Oral cancer is often not diagnosed until it reaches the late stages and thus the five year survival rate is 54%. Smoking also causes unsightly dark stains on teeth, bad breath and a condition called black hairy tongue where irritation from smoking results in dark staining of the tongue.
