Diabetes is caused by a lack of insulin in the body, or an insensitivity to insulin by cells, which causes a rise in blood glucose. High glucose levels affect the nerves, eyes, blood vessels and the kidneys, resulting in eventual failure of these organs and tissues. Prevention of these diabetic complications is possible through close control of blood sugar levels and blood pressure.
