An ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist has been arrested and charged for the death of a patient after the doctor prematurely removed a breathing tube which was keeping her airway open after surgery. The doctor was given a criminal charge as he neglected to review the patients' notes that were available to him, which lead to his dangerous decision. The patient later went to hospital with breathing difficulties where she suffered respiratory arrest and anoxic brain injury. Criminal proceedings for medical malpractice are uncommon, but do happen, e.g. an anaesthesiologist was charged with an 8 year old boy's death after he fell asleep during the child's surgery, and the child died; and 3 nurses were held criminally accountable for a neonate's death after the baby was given an overdose of penicillin.
