Alcoholism is a common disease that normally only presents when the sufferers irreversibly damage their body, relationships, and good name. Due to its social consequences, many people are ashamed to seek help, and/or deny that they "have a problem". Dangerous drinking habits are also difficult to detect on general check-ups at the doctor. Blood tests looking at the health of the blood and liver can monitor extent of alcohol intake, but they are not sensitive or specific for alcohol induce disease. Genes are currently under investigation to provide more effective detection of alcohol abuse. Early detection and treatment of alcohol dependence is crucial in reducing its impact on the person's life and offers far better prognoses for overall health and wellbeing.
