Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease kills over 100,000 people in America annually. Traditionally it has affected middle-aged people but it is becoming increasingly prevalent in people in their 30's. COPD cannot be cured or reversed but can be treated. People with COPD are usually not diagnosed until they start to develop symptoms by which stage up to 50% of lung function may already have been lost. $32.1 billion is spent on COPD in the US annually. COPD symptoms include: coughing, excessive mucus production, shortness of breath, wheezing and chest tightness.
