Men who suffer from heart disease and erectile dysfunction, can now use medicines to encourage erections (PDE-5 inhibitors) according to results from a recent study. The study showed that discontinuation of nitrates in stable male populations with heart disease with continuation of other heart drugs (beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers) and the implementation of PDE-5 inhibitor drug, improved 85% of the study population's sexual function. There were no complications or resulting heart problems. Nitrates are used to treat angina, or chest pain, caused by coronary artery narrowing, and affects 17.5 in 1000 Americans. Nitrates are contraindicated in use with PDE-5 inhibitors, but can be superseded by beta blocker or calcium channel antagonist therapy.
