FDA approval of weight loss pill is not necessarily good news
Xenical was the first weight loss drug to be approved by the FDA to treat obesity in adolescents. However, some experts are concerned that diet pills may cause high blood pressure, heart palpitations and irregular heartbeats, blurred vision headaches, insomnia, anxiety and depression. They claim that the availability of diet pills precludes people with weight problems from learning to eat properly and exercising. Claims were also made that the drug could cause gas, diarrhea, vitamin deficiencies and electrolyte imbalance. The diet pills may also mask other eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
